Call on the UN to hold China accountable for torture in Tibet

As part of the Tibet Advocacy Coalition, we will be in Geneva next week when the UN Committee Against Torture (CAT) reviews China’s compliance with its obligations under the Convention against Torture. This is our opportunity to get the CAT to raise the cases of Tibetan political prisoners who are facing the same risk as Tenzin Delek Rinpoche who recently died after being tortured in Chinese prison.

China's torture review presents an opportunity to raise the cases of Tibetan political prisoners who are facing the same risk as Tenzin Delek Rinpoche who recently died after being tortured in Chinese prison. Rinpoche's death under suspicious circumstances on July 12, 2015 sent shock waves throughout the international community working for human rights. If China is not held accountable for such acts, they will only feel emboldened to continue torturing political prisoners in Tibet.

In February, the Tibet Advocacy Coalition submitted a report to the Committee in response to China's State Report; our report provided evidence of the torture of Tibetan political prisoners. China has so far refused to respond to, or investigate, a single case of Tibetan torture victims in Chinese prisons. This is unacceptable and we need to intensify our pressure on China. Such blatant violations by China cannot go unchecked.

We urge the Committee against Torture to confront China on it's atrocious torture record. Your actions can have a profound positive effect for current and potential torture victims in Tibet.
